Parents in the Know: Protecting Children from Abuse

Victims Resource Center presents hundreds of Child Safety programs each year to children in pre-school through second grades. These programs empower chil-dren to say “No!” to inappropriate touches and to tell an adult if someone tries to touch them in a way that makes them uncomfortable.

While these programs are important, they are not enough. We recognize that adults must take responsibility for protecting children and preventing child sexual abuse. To help parents develop skills to prevent abuse, Victims Resource Center is collaborating with the Wilkes-Barre City Health Department to offer Parents in the Know.

Parents in the Know is an innovative practice-based child sexual abuse prevention program that helps parents and guardians build, practice and strengthen skills to prevent child sexual abuse.

The goals of this program are:

  • Promote safe and respectful behaviors between adults and children;
  • Recognize questionable behaviors in adults;
  • Promote discussion of healthy relationships, age appropriate sexual development, sexual abuse prevention and healthy sexuality.

Parents in the Know consists of four 2-hour interactive sessions to help parents and guardians build, practice and strengthen skills to prevent child sexual abuse. It educates parents, promotes awareness, and builds skills for intervention and prevention. To schedule a Parents in Know pro-gram for your group or organization, contact Victims Resource Center Education Department at 570 823-0766, Ext. 213, or email us. The program is free.
